A tough first day at the Techno & Raceboard Europeans

Challenging conditions faced the competitors at the first day of racing of the 2010 European Championship. The event hosted by the Andalusian Sailing Federation has attracted an entry of over 300 boards - 189 Techno 293 competitors, 45 Raceboard youths and masters; and 75 RSX men and women competing in the Kim Lythgoe Memorial New Year's Race.
With 100 registered in the Techno under 17 boys it was necessary to separate the fleet into two groups - yellow and blue - and it was these racers who were called out to race on the only race area available to the race committee due to the wind and sea conditions. Although sailing conditions were difficult over the course, the real challenge was sailing from the harbour and down the channel to the open water! Full credit to the race committee, coaches and support crews for the efficient management of the day's racing. After one race it was decided that conditions were no longer suitable, and racing was cancelled for the day so no races for Raceboard youths and masters. The forecast is not good for day 2 - with increased wind and swell a big possibility - but fingers crossed!

Raceboard championship gets started . . .

Day two of the championship produced wind and waves in abundance, but today the sail out of the harbour channel to the course area was "manageable" for most of the fleet.
Three races, back to back, for both youth and masters. French sailors dominated in the youth division - and only one point separates Paul Hirtzmann (FRA 442) from Benjamin Longy (FRA1311). However they cannot ignore the chasing pack of nations that includes Sam Sills (GBR 60), the 2009 Techno 293 World and European Champion. The Masters fleet may not be big, but 8 nations are represented, and after 3 races it is led by local hero Francisco "Paco" Manchon. Competition is just as fierce in this fleet - with Chris Gibson (GBR 0) and Pawel Frydrychowicz (POL 125) in close contact with the leader! The Manchon family are also doing well in the RS:X women fleet with Blanca (ESP 1) holding pole position after posting the most consistent performance of the day. Blanca is competing, along with 70+ other top olympic racers, in the Kim Lythgoe Memorial Race. Kim, a well respected coach and friend to many within the sport, was lost in late 2009; but his memory will forever be commemorated in the New Year's Race. Three races. back to back, for all divisions on the final day of racing at the 2010 European Championships.
Predominantly light winds was the order of the day ensuring a very wide mixture of conditions tested the sailors in these championships. Consistency won the day! Here are the podium finishers in each division: Youth 1) Benjamin Longy (FRA 1311) Masters 1) Chris Gibson (GBR 0) Photos - Patrick de Bruyn, Windthings, has made a great offer. "If somebody wants a picture from my album they can get it in a higher resolution for free. All they have to do is send me an email with the name of the album, the nr of the picture and the sailnumber of the sailor. Within a few days they get the picture by email." |
