Raceboard European Championships

4 - 7 June 2009

Liepaja, Latvia

Final Day of Racing

With a near faultless display Patrik Pollak (SVK 1) took the 2009 Raceboard European title.

In the first race of the day he was sailing true to form with yet another win; but even champions can make mistakes!  In the second race of the day Patrik sailed to the wrong mark and a lengthy detour meant he could only make fourth place.

The fight for second and third places on the podium was very close. Three good races today by Juha Petri Blinnikka (FIN 6), including a first place in the final race of the series, meant he tied with youth racer Rihards Akmentins (LAT 30).  However the tie break went in favour of the younger man.

Ex olypmic racer Vita Matise (LAT 1) finished very strongly today to complete the series in 6th place overall and first woman.

The raceboard championship was the premier event of the 2009 Liepaja Windsurfing Festival which also included round one of the Baltic Sea Cup. The BSC comprises 3 events for Techno 293 junior and RSX youth racers, and hosts this year include Latvia, Germany and Russia.

A very successful and well run regatta - full credit to windsurfing club Rietumkrasts, Latvian Windsurfing Association and Liepaja City. Eleven races over 3 days, in a wide range of conditions, completed a memorable championships and ensured that Liepaja Windsurfing Festival has a great future.

Day Two of Racing

On the next day of racing in Liepaja, Latvia, another four races were completed for all fleets.

However the leader board remained unchanged - Patrik Pollak  continued to dominate the Raceboard fleet.

One more day to finalise this first event in the 2009 Baltic Sea Cup - and a further opportunity for Liepaja and the Latvian Windsurfing Association to consolidate their position as a contender for hosting a future Raceboard World Championship.

First day of racing

A full days racing was enjoyed by all fleets - with 4 races for Raceboard and RSX youth, and 3 races for Techno 293.

The previous evening competitors, officials and guests were welcomed by representatives from Leipaja City Council and Latvian Windsurfing Association. The official opening was concluded by an innovative and entertaining performance by the Leipaja Navy Orchestra.

Liepaja, a wonderful city of about 90,000 residents, is a gemstone, located on Latvia's Baltic coast.  It is easily accessible,  220 km or 136 miles west of Riga, 100 km or 62 miles north of Klaipeda.  You will be surprised how unspoiled and beautiful the central beach is, and how white and soft the sand is!
