70 km north from Amsterdam Schiphol airport (65 km motorway) you'll find the small town Medemblik on the IJsselmeer coast. A well known racing location for Olympic class windsurfers. Medemblik has a long history with hosting one of the ISAF World Cup events, formerly known as the Spa Regatta.
Medemblik is the smallest but oldest of the West- Frisian towns. Count Floris the Fifth granted Medemblik city rights as far back as 1289. In order to keep the rebellious West Frisians under control, he had a fortress built which stands proudly at the mouth of the harbour to this day: Radboud Castle. Medemblik received town privileges in 1289, nowadays the city counts about 7.600 inhabitants.
Due to its rich history, Medemblik is an interesting place to visit. Nowadays Medemblik is one of the most important sailingcenters of the Ijsselmeer with several yachting harbours. More information about Medemblik can be found at http://www.vvvmedemblik.nl/

As predicted, after 12 races, Spaniard Alex Buchau is now at the top of the leaderboard as the second discard comes into play. Winner of all today's races, he has a massive 13 point lead over Grandmaster Juha Blinnikka who is just two points ahead of the Brit, Mark Kay. Pedro Moura scored his worst results of the competition so far and has been relegated to fourth, although just another two points behind so still has a chance for the podium. In the Youth Fleet, Russian Artem Murashev has made it to the top but has equal points with Daniel Blinnikka from Finland so the battle is on for the final day of this championship! They are both a clear 8 points ahead of Argentinian Bautista Saubidet Birkner who is facing a challenge for the podium from the host country's Joris van Essen just one point behind. RESULTS: Masters after 12 / Youths after 12 Olympic superstars from past and present met the future stars of windsurfing in Medemblik today. Gold medalist Stephan van den Berg (Los Angeles 1984) and Dorian van Rijsselberghe (London 2012) enjoyed the friendly atmosphere and signed a lot of autographs. Stephan regretted not being able to compete with the Raceboard Masters at Medemblik in his home country but work commitments and visiting the recent London Olympics made it impossible. | |
